SMASHED: New research on Victoria’s homelessness entry points

The Victorian Homelessness Network (VHN) has released SMASHED: Homelessness Services at Breaking Point, new statewide research examining the experiences of homelessness entry point services across Victoria.
Staff from 50 entry point services across Victoria contributed to the research, including entry point services from Ovens Murray and Goulburn, providing local data alongside services from across the state.
The research found that almost 70% of participating entry point services had to close their doors at times due to capacity limits, staff shortages and critical incidents. Services were also unable to assist families with children at risk of homelessness 76% of the time surveyed, while more than 300 critical incidents were recorded during the 28-day survey period.
The findings provide a snapshot of the pressures being experienced across Victoria’s homelessness entry point system and identify areas for further investment and reform.
